Life Skill Curriculum:
Sheela is a class 9 student. She has been missing school for the last
few months and has been meeting her boyfriend. Recently, she has missed her periods. She is anxious that she could be pregnant. She is scared and
does not know how she would get out of this difficult situation.
Ravi is a class 10 student. There has been a sudden decline in his studies.
It all started when he and his friends decided to watch a pornographic movie. Now, he cannot do without watching these movies. He is tormented by what it
is doing to him and he is worried abut his future.
This is not just a story but a common occurrence in the lives of our youth in India. Today, more and more young people are exploring sexual relationships during teenage than ever before. This is mainly due to the lack of proper knowledge about the changes they experience during puberty. This exploration makes them an easy prey to HIV and other sexually transmitted diseases, not to mention the emotional and mental trauma involved.
Our life skill curriculum entitled “Dare to be Different” is a tool to reach out to youngsters with the right knowledge, to equip them to sail through puberty without harming their body or emotions. It promotes sexual abstinence as the best choice for a healthy and AIDS-free life throughout its 10 modules.
Another feature of this manual, which sets its apart, is its generic approach to handling youth-related issues like negative peer pressure, low self esteem, addictions, etc, providing a mixed bag of tricks to handle each one. The topics covered in this curriculum are:
J Self Esteem
J Body and Puberty
J Dreams and Goals
J Peer Pressure
J Media Literacy
J Choices
J Love, Dating and Pre-Marital Sex
J HIV/AIDS
Each module has been designed to be interactive, informative and interesting to the students. The curriculum is not only taught in the traditional classroom teaching method but is also infused with games, group discussions and audio-visual presentations to make it enjoyable.
